GIS Intern

Website Santa Clara Valley Water District

The Watersheds Division at the Santa Clara Valley Water District is looking for a part-time intern to assist and play a key role in implementing its integrated water resource master planning effort, the One Water Plan.  The primary roles of the position will be to create and analyze geographic information system (GIS) information related to water resources management and support the project manager with a variety of planning tasks. Please forward your resume and an 8 ½” x 11” sample map created in GIS to demonstrate your skill and creativity to Brian Mendenhall at no later than July 6, 2018.

The Santa Clara Valley Water District is responsible for 10 dams and reservoirs, as well as 275 miles of rivers and streams for the county’s 1.8 million residents. In order to align District resources with growing needs of water supply, flood protection, and watershed stewardship, the District is embarking on an integrated water resources master planning effort called the One Water Plan. The master planning effort includes a countywide framework and five watershed-specific plans.  At this time the District is finalizing its One Water framework and is well underway with its first watershed-specific plan.

An integral part of the project is to display and manipulate all of this information in a coherent and meaningful way through GIS layers on desktops and potentially through a web-based application that can be accessed by the public. The District is seeking an intern who is self motivated with strong GIS capabilities. The intern will be coordinating with various District staff to gather data and implement the project so strong communications skills are also important. Because the data being considered is primarily environmental resource based, and interest in the subject is also preferred. In addition to GIS work, the intern will be tasked with supporting the Project Manager on work including stakeholder engagement, graphics development, project organization, and preparation of presentation materials. We are seeking a intern to truly be a part of the team with an opportunity to contribute and to learn about the profession of water resources management.
